The bottom map is a specific map of Alaska. A small inset map superimposes Alaska over the continental United States, providing an idea of the relative size of the state versus the continental U. Allied nations and those occupied by the Allies are colored shades of pink, while nations belonging to or occupied by the Axis are colored with shades of green. Every country is labeled, along with the archipelagos in the Pacific and even individual islands. Plus, the insignia of the United Nations are illustrated along the bottom border. The ever widening circles extend to include much of the world. Although much of the city was destroyed, the Battle of Berlin, as it is now known, is generally thought to have been a failure. The effort accomplished little in the way of crippling or even limiting the German war machine. The image features a globe centered on the Pacific floating in space. This work is unusual for Kallem, who typically focused on portraiture and the occasional landscape.

Figuring out when a road map was printed can sometimes involve a bit of detective work because the year of publication may not be shown on the cover or in the legend. The table below shows the codes for the two main map producers, Rand McNally and H. These codes are often found in the lower margin, printed in small type. Rand McNally first used date codes in , and Gousha started in Census data and status of road construction are other clues you can use to confirm dates.

Those attempting to date Clason state road maps issued from to are presented with unusual challenges. A systematic review of the individual maps contained in the Clason Touring Atlases, which have now been dated See Liedholm and Greaves, Dating Clason Touring Atlases , revealed that the road legends and other map symbols varied over the years. This was particularly true of the kinds and number of road types portrayed in the legend.
However, there were often numerous state variations in these legends within any one year. In the Touring Atlas alone, for example, there were 17 different state road legends. Thus, if these state maps are to be more precisely dated, a more detailed state by state, year by year listing of the key map symbols is needed. The Clason State Map Dating Guide , is organized by state and lists the map features such as the title, sub-title, road legends, and official highway markers year by year.
One should use these features on the state map to delineate the year. Midget maps, which were typically identical to the regular maps except in size, were produced in several years along with the regular maps. The Clason maps became more standardized in , so after that date there were fewer variations in the map features by state and year.

Clason Map Company was a map publisher in Denver, Colorado that published the first road atlas of the U. It failed during the Great Depression. Clason maps are notorious for having no date information. Instead, various elements of the maps changed over time.
